The Burnet High School softball team lost to Lampasas 10-7 April 17 in the District 24-4A regular season finale.

The Lady Dawgs (11-12-1, 7-5) now turn their attention to Gatesville, (20-12-1, 6-5 fourth in District 23-4A) in a bi-district best-of-three series. Game one is at 6 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Temple College, 2600 S. First St. in Temple.

Game two will begin at noon Saturday, April 26, with site still to be determined.

With the score tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Badgers hit a grand slam for the win.

“We fell short,” Lady Dawgs head coach Ali Tippie said. “(Senior pitcher) Presley (Crawford) pitched through being sick. Although she was sick, she did her job. We jumped out early with a lot of energy.”

The Lady Lady Dawgs (11-12-1, 7-5) scored a run in the first inning, three in the fourth, and two in the top of the fifth for a 6-0 lead.

But in the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Lady Badgers (12-14, 4-8) trimmed the deficit to 6-4.

Burnet added a run in the sixth inning, but Lampasas scored four unanswered, none bigger than the grand slam in the bottom of the final inning.

“After a couple bad innings with errors, we allowed Lampasas to catch up and take the momentum, which converted to a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning,” the coach said.

The win came on the heels of beating Taylor (7-15, 3-9) 5-0 April 15.

Crawford led the way.

“We had a good start to the week with a big win on senior night versus Taylor,” Tippie said. “Presley Crawford had 14 strikeouts and only allowed two hits. No runs scored.”

The Lady Dawgs’ bi-district opponent will be announced once play-in games are settled. District 23-4A members China Spring, Gatesville and Lorena have identical 6-4 records. The seedings will be determined after a play-in game scheduled for Monday, April 22, was conducted.

The Lady Dawgs will enter the Class 4A Division I playoffs as the district’s top seed in that bracket.

“While the game versus Lampasas made no impact on playoffs and seedings,” Tippie said, “we look forward to bouncing back stronger and learning from the experience.”
